Tui-na Massage
Chinese medical bodywork that moves what has become stuck.
More Than Massage — A Medical Modality
Tui-na (pronounced "twee-nah") is a form of Chinese medical bodywork that has been practiced for thousands of years. Unlike Western massage, which focuses on muscle tissue, Tui-na works on the meridian system — the network of energy channels through which Qi and Blood flow.
Through specific hand techniques applied to acupressure points, Tui-na moves stagnation, tonifies deficiency, clears heat, and calms the nervous system. The techniques range from gentle rolling and kneading to more stimulating percussion and point-pressing, depending on what the patient's pattern requires.
For animals, Tui-na is often more accessible than acupuncture needles — particularly for anxious patients or those who find needle placement stressful. It can be used as a standalone therapy or as a complement to TCVM food therapy and herbal protocols.
What to Expect
01
Intake & Assessment
Each session begins with a brief check-in on your pet's current state — any new symptoms, energy changes, or behavioral shifts. We observe your pet's body language, postural patterns, and areas of tension before beginning work.
02
Tui-na Treatment
Treatment is delivered at your pet's pace — no restraint, no forcing. We work with points and regions appropriate to their current pattern, using a combination of rolling, kneading, pressing, and percussion techniques. Sessions typically run 30–45 minutes.
03
Session Notes + Home Care
After each session, you receive written session notes documenting what was observed and treated, along with any home care recommendations — simple point-pressing techniques you can apply between sessions to extend the therapeutic effect.

Tui-na FAQ
Most animals — even anxious ones — respond well to Tui-na. We move at your pet's pace. If they need to move around, take breaks, or change positions, that's fine. There is no restraint involved. Some animals are skeptical initially and deeply relaxed by the end of the first session. We've rarely met a pet who couldn't be helped with appropriate technique selection.
Regular pet massage focuses on soft tissue relaxation. Tui-na uses specific techniques on specific acupressure points with specific therapeutic intent based on the animal's TCVM pattern. It is a medical modality, not a relaxation service — though relaxation is often a welcome side effect. The technique selection depends on what the pattern requires: tonification for deficiency, sedation for excess, moving for stagnation.
For acute conditions, 3–6 sessions often produce significant improvement. For chronic conditions or ongoing maintenance, monthly or bi-monthly sessions are common. After your first visit, we'll give you a realistic recommendation for your pet's specific situation — we don't create unnecessary dependence on ongoing sessions.
